The Department has a significant impact on the inclusive growth and development of librarianship in India and abroad. In 2024, the department proudly marks 78 successful years of providing education in Library and Information Science. The Department has also achieved many milestones, notably that it is the only department in the country to have had the rare distinction of having four Padma Shree Awardees, a First National Tagore Fellow, and many academicians who became Vice-Chancellors and Chief Ministers (Delhi).

About the Department
The Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) was established in 1946 and became the first Department in the country to have a formal degree program in Library and Information Science. It had a venerable legacy and international acclaim for the highest academic standards, distinguished faculty, illustrious alumni, varied co-curricular activities, and modern infrastructure. It was the first Department in the whole Commonwealth countries to award the first PhD degree in Library Science in 1957 and was also first in the World after the USA to have a Master's program in Library Science in 1950.
