The Department has a significant impact on the inclusive growth and development of librarianship in India and abroad. The department has completed its 75 glorious years journey in 2021. The Department has also many milestones, notably, that it is the department of the country to had a rare distinction of Four Padma Shree Awardees, First National Tagore Fellow, and many academicians who became Vice-Chancellors and a Chief Minister (Delhi).

About the Department
The Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS) was established in 1946 and became the first Department in the country to have a formal degree program in Library and Information Science. It had a venerable legacy and international acclaim for the highest academic standards, distinguished faculty, illustrious alumni, varied co-curricular activities and modern infrastructure. It was the first Department in the whole Commonwealth countries to award the first PhD degree in Library Science in 1957 and was also first in the World after the USA to have a Master's program in Library Science in 1950.
