Arrow The Department of Library and Information Science instituted in 1946, is organized in the Faculty of Arts with the efforts of (late) Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, Prof. S. Dasgupta, and Sir Maurice Gwyer.

Arrow For the first time in the country that a Library Science Department was constituted on par with other teaching departments at this University. and recognized as an Associated Project of UNESCO. For a long time, this was the only Department in the country which, in addition to the B.L.I.Sc., degree, it was providing education and research facilities at higher levels leading to the MLISc, MPhil, and PhD degrees.

Arrow The Department during the past 75 years of its existence has played an vital role in Library Education in the country. Already 4049 students have taken their Library Science degrees from this Department, of which 78 PhD degrees, 158 M.Phil. degrees, 1350 MLISc degrees, and 2463 BLISc & Diploma degrees (up to May 2018).

Arrow Department ever since its inception continues to play its role of leadership in Library and Information Science education with the changing and complex needs of libraries and documentation centers in the country. The Department took concrete steps in 1972 to introduce new areas of study in Information Science and Management, such as 'Computer and its Application in Libraries,' Information Storage and Retrieval,' and 'Library Systems Analysis & Statistical Methods' in its curriculum. Department revised its syllabi in 2004 both in BLISc & MLISc Programmes.

Arrow Again revised its syllabi in 2009 with more emphasis on Information and Communication Technology applications in Libraries in both BLISc. and MLISc. Programmes in each semester. A special paper on 'Information Literacy Applications in LIS' and exclusive paper on Marketing of LIS Products and Services and Management Consultancy' in MLISc Programme.

Arrow The Department adequately equipped with state-of-the-art ICT infrastructure for students not only for classroom teaching but also for hands-on practicals. It is providing free Wi-Fi connectivity and email facilities for all the bonafide students of the Department.

Arrow The Department has already established a very high reputation for itself in India and abroad. The Alumni of the Department consists of well-known professionals who are occupying very prominent positions not only in India but also in several other countries of the world. The faculty consists of teachers who are well known in the profession in this country as well as internationally. The Department provides facilities for Library, Hostel facilities for outside students, Medical facilities, Freeship and scholarships for meritorious students.

Arrow Every year the Department organizes visits to reputed Libraries/Documentation Centres in Delhi and outside Delhi in which participation by BLISc students shall be compulsory.

p Landmarks of the Department

Arrow First Department in India to start a Diploma course in Library Science in 1946.

Arrow First Department in British Commonwealth to start M.Lib.Sc. in 1949. First Department in British Commonwealth to introduce the doctoral programme in 1951 and first Ph.D. degree was awarded in 1957. At that time, it was the only Department in the whole of British Commonwealth conducting a Ph.D. in Library Science.

Arrow First, to start M.Phil. Programme in Library and Information Science in 1978.

Arrow First to introduce two new papers in M.Lib.Sc. in 1972 on (i) Library Systems Analysis & Elements of Statistical Methods, and (ii ) Computer Application in Library in M.Lib.Sc.

Arrow First, to introduce the concept of workshop-cum-library, which, later in 1999, was converted into state-of-the-art Computer Lab.

Arrow Delhi University Library System (DUlS) has started the post-MLISc Internship Training Programme for the students of the Department, wherein the students get a chance to work for six months in Delhi University Library at a stipend of Rs. 7,500/- to 11,500/- p.m.

Arrow Department pursued re-opening the entry for LIS professionals at the levels of Library Clerk, Semi-Professional-Assistant, which were blocked since 1986.

Arrow First, to introduce exclusive paper on Marketing of LIS Products and Services and Management Consultancy subject in M.L.I.Sc. Course in 2004.

Arrow First, to introduce Information Literacy Applications in LIS subject in M.L.I.Sc. Course in 2009.
