Abstract:Information is a vital resource for life long /earning. It enables people to perform all sorts of activities perfectly and efficiently. It is also considered as an important resource for the social, economic and overall development of a nation. Today information environment is posing several challenges and demands people to validate, evaluate and interpret information so as the check the validity before it is applied for various purposes. This present paper describes in brief the role of information literacy endeavors in public libraries. It also discusses the need for information literacy training for both public library librarians and their users. A few examples where information literacy efforts are already being made are mentioned.

Abstract: Deals with the definitions of digital preservation and the requirements for preservation. The need required for preserving digital objects and the characteristics are discussed with the preservation requirements and Storage considerations. The author explained the managerial issues, challenges and the preservation strategies have been explained. The managerial aspects of digital preservation and planning requirements are given along with the advantages of digital access and the problems faced for preservation. The technical issues like Intellectual property rights, societal and legal issues, access issues and policies, quality control, financial issues and human resource management etc. are also discussed in detail. Limitations and standards for the digital preservation are given at the end of the article.

Abstract:Indian Higher Education System is one of the largest systems in the world, facing challenges due to globalization, increased academic population, knowledge explosion in different forms and a lot of research and development projects-on one side and on the other side reduced budget, diversity of users' needs, reduction in staff, inflation, escalation in cost of scholarly publications and so on. These cause pruning of scholarly publications for subscription, which becomes a barrier to the flow of exploded information from generation to the end users. The library consortium is a better solution. The Government of India initiatives such as INDEST, UGC-Infonet, CSIR Consortia, FORSA, IIM Library Consortia. JUC-DAEF Consortia-Based Subscription to Electronic Resources are briefly discussed and suggestions are made.

KUMAR (Kumar) & GUPTA (B M). Application of Statistical Distributions in Collaboration Data Profile of Research Specialties: Case Studies in Quantitative Ecology and Multivariate Analysis.29,1-2; 2004; 44-54

Abstract:The main objective of this paper is to explore, analyse and test the validity and applicability of selected probability distributions to the authorship distribution with time in the publications of quantitative ecology and multivariate analysis. It was observed that Geometric and Truncated Poisson distributions adequately described the distribution of the number of authors per publication. The results also indicate that these distributions are valid in collaboration distributions over a period of time in the development of research specialty.

Abstract: The paper deals with a study conducted on literature related to information seeking behaviour from LISA Plus. The out come of the normal keyword search in USA Plus are analyzed to present the growth of publications; collaboration-ship pattern of authors; most contributed authors; languages in which maximum number of articles are published; type of publications in which information scientists preferred to publish their works; highly preferred journals in which information seeking behaviour related works are published; and the contents of information seeking behaviour related literature through subject descriptors.

Abstract:
This study is based on a survey often university libraries of Gujarat state.It reveals that, majority of the university libraries do not provide abstracting and indexing services, CAS/SDI services, CD-ROM search, etc. This paper also highlight some factors required for the radical change in users services and concludes that the university library staff, should provide foundation for batter library services.

KUMAR (Rajeev ) & KAUR (Dramtipal). Use of Internet by Teachers and Students in Shaheed Bhagat Singh College of Engineering & Technology: A Case Study.29,1-2; 2004; 81-94

Abstract:This study examines the use of Internet by teachers and students in Shaheed Bhagat Singh College of Engineering S. Technology (SBSCET). A well-structured questionnaire was distributed among 30 teachers and 30 students (10 from each branch) to find out the use of Internet facilities at SBSCET. The present study demonstrates and elaborates the various aspects of Internet use such as, frequency of Internet use, methods used for learning of Internet skill, most frequently used place for Internet use, , purposes for which the Internet is used, use of intermediary services, ways to browse the information from the Internet, negative and positive aspects of the Internet, problems faced by the users are satisfaction level of users with the Internet facilities provided in the college. Suggestions have been given to make the service more beneficial for the academic community of the college.
