CHOWDHURY (GG) & MAHAPTRA (M). Application of the Theory of Relational Analysis in Information Retrieval. 14,1;1989;1-12

Farradene's theory of relational analysis has wide applications in information retrieval. The major areas of application cover their use in retrospective searches. Semantic analysis of information, concept organisation and control, efficiency as an information retrieval tool, multilingual indexing tool, in SDI, term relations in thesauri, study of nature of subjects, computerized indexing systems, analysis and measuring of information and organization of current information. It is observed that most of the applications were in scientific subjects and the databases considered were too small to generalize. Five new areas of research or relational indexing have been suggested i.e. compilation of a detailed manual, wide application in scientific, social science, and humanities subject literature, application of relational analysis in study of the nature of subjects, computerized indexing systems, analysis and measuring of information and organisation of current information. It is observed that most of the applications were in scientific subjects and the databases considered were too small to generalize. Five new areas of research on relational indexing have been suggested i.e. compilation of a detailed manual, wide application in scientific, social science, and humanities subject literature, application of relational analysis in study of the nature of subject literature, comparative efficiency of relational indexing, and compilation of a relational thesaurus.

MAHAPATRA (M). Survey of Articles Published in Indian Library Science Journals During 1971-1975. 3,2;1978; 172-79

A Survey of articles published in Indian Library Science journals during 1971-75 is made. A number of assumptions were made to categorize the articles into different groups. The categorization was made by content, by purpose, by presentation, and by nature of authors. After collecting the data in slips from the periodicals, it was tabulated and presented by graphic methods and then interpreted. Many interesting features were revealed such as 1972 as a year of diverse growth, lack of interest in some divisions, maximum number of basic and general type of articles, decrease in technical articles, dominancy of professionals to teachers, areas concentration of publications, etc.
