Rokade, S.M. Agriculture Education and Libraries in India. New Delhi : Essential Books, 2009, 296 Pages, Price : Rs. 995 including postal charges.
Dr. S.M.Rokade’s book ‘Agriculture Education and Libraries in India’ makes the author an exact man who authoritatively penned pep book for agricultural and library and information science students. The book unveils with a quote from Atharva Veda’s chapter 12 followed by inspiring snap of great humanitarian, Baba Amte who himself envisaged workers’ university in the country. The book is embellished with Dr. M.S.Swaminathan’s foreword. After Independence in 1947, the first education commission headed by Dr. S.Radhakrishnan recommended the establishment of rural universities which later on led to the birth of agriculture universities. The first which was founded at Pantnagar in Uttarkhand in 1958 and the year 2008 is being celebrated the 50th anniversary of Agricultural University Movement in our country. Today a scientific way of farming is required and even school syllabi need to have incurred agriculture science. A holistic system of agricultural education should include con-current attention to education, research and extension education. It can be learnt well from the practical wisdom and experience of farm women and men who derive their knowledge from practical field work. The author has rightly complied invaluable information on both agricultural education, libraries in India and information system. The book divided into three segments such as agriculture education in India, agricultural university libraries in India and agricultural information system. The first part of the book Agriculture Education in India comprises development of agriculture science in India, agriculture education, changing scenario of agricultural teaching, agricultural research and extension education in India and fourth deans committee on agricultural education in India. The second part Agricultural University Libraries in India comprises development of agricultural university libraries in India ICAR research institute libraries in India role of agricultural universities and ICAR institute libraries in agricultural education, research and extension education in India users needs and services of library, need for use. of modem information technology techniques in agricultural university and ICAR institute libraries.
The third part Agricultural Information system comprises agricultural resources information system (ARIS), and agricultural research information
system with agricultural research personnel information system ARPIS, ARFIS, ARLIS, ARMIS and ARIS. This is a timely publication since there is concern now about the stagnation in agriculture progress. Bapuji, around 75 years ago propagated that Indian agriculture will progress only when the divorce between brain and brawn or intellect and labour is ended. Brain and brawn can be married only if our young farm graduates take to agriculture as a career. When Gandhiji’s propagation seems faltering, the book stands as survivor to boost those youngsters who are akin to cling agriculture as a profession.
The book is quite useful publication the academic staff, scientists, professionals in library and information science, agriculture and allied sciences as a text and reference book. The book could be substantiated fruitful to the advanced students of a graduate and post graduate in majoring “Agriculture Information System” (M.L.I.Sc) and also as a reference book to the the users of all faculties and students who aspire for competitive examinations.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Agriculture Universities in the country, Dr. Rokade’s book should be read and used for revamping and revitalizing our agricultural education. A book written meticulously with great prowess by a man who always loved to be among books (Librarian) is to be chewed and digested. By S.P.Deshpande
