Welcome to the Department of Library and Information Science
Education and training are vital in the process of building up a profession. Countries all over the world today need to emphasize on building the creative and
productive capacities of their workforce. Every sector has recognized the significance of information as one of the determinants of social, economic and cultural
growth, therefore, an effective information system in the country is necessary to be supported by an efficient workforce. The need to develop library and information
professionals as facilitators is always there and Department of Library and Information Science, University of Delhi has been fulfilling this responsibility. It has
produced an efficient workforce to manage Library and Information Centres. This year LIS education is going to complete 100 years in India. The Department of Library and
Information Science under the Faculty of Arts was set up by Dr.S.R. Ranganathan and Prof. S.Dasgupta in 1946 as a full-fledged Department like other constituents Departments
of the University. It is the first LIS Department in the country taking responsibilities of teaching as well as research in the field of Library Science. The Department is
offering Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLISc), Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc) Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)
courses to the students.
The Department has during the past 70 years of its existence has played significant role in Library and Information Science education in the country. It has two air
conditioned computer Labs, which are well equipped with various IT gadgets and internet connectivity. The computer Laboratories for BLISc and MLISc students has 28 All-in-one Desktop
computer, wall mounted LCD projector, 2 Scanners and one heavy duty Printer. The computer Lab for M.Phil and Ph.D research scholars equipped with 15 High-end Computers and 1 scanner. The departmental
library has an excellent collection of information resources. It has a database of textbooks and dissertations which are available online.
The Department launched its website in 2007 which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Pro-Vice-Chancellor, University of Delhi. I specially congratulate and thank
to Dr. M. Madhusudhan for his remarkable efforts in designing, developing and maintaining this website.
I am confident that our Department will maintain the quality standards in developing an efficient workforce in the field of Library and Information Science.
