KRISHAN KUMAR & VYAS (SD). Classification Practice in Delhi University College Libraries. 4,1;1979; 41-76

The study is based on information collected through a questionnaire circulated among 66 librarians of colleges (out of whom 65 responded) during October 1976 to October 1977. Enumerates the various schemes of classification adopted by college libraries. Describes modifications carried out in the schemes. Discusses the problems faced in classifying the documents. Enumerates the subjects which are in urgent need of revision in Colon Classification, Dewey Decimal Classification and Universal Decimal Classification. Describes the extent of satisfaction achieved on the part of college librarians regarding schemes of classification being used by them. Discusses the future of Colon Classification and Dewey Decimal Classification schemes in India .

Describes the availability of DDC21 in two formats. Enumerates the related tools. Discusses the organization of the scheme, major changes, editorial process and cooperation as a basis. Describes changes in standard subdivisions, use of faceted approach, change in terminology, user convenience, use of information technology and use of scheme. Mentions some of the weaknesses in the system along with suggestions for improvement. Concludes that the system has not only survived but is now pulsating with new dynamism.

States that the libraries came into being to serve the needs of the society right from its evolution. Concludes that technology is a tool, which needs to be used wisely as a means to achieve the goals.

Makes out a case for the provision of adequate financial assistance for researchers and organisations including sabbatical leave, fellowships, etc. for individuals. Suggests coordination of research and pleads for exchange of teachers among various departments in India and other advanced countries.

Discuses the computerized systems for stroage and retrieval of references developed at NLM such as MEDLARS (MEDical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System) and MEDLINE (MEDLARS on LINE). Describes activities of different divisions such as National Medical Audiovisual Centre. Toxicology Information programme and Lister Hill National Center . Mentions the network arrangement for sharing resources. Describes the role at international level and as a pioneer in the application of library technology.

KRISHAN KUMAR. Distinctive Contribution of Ranganathan to Library Classification. 17,2;1992;115-27

Points out that Dr S R Ranganathan was truly a great scholar, who made rich contribution to different aspects of library and information science, but is better known for his work in the field of library classification. Discusses the distinctive contribution to classification such as normative principles, three plane model of work, freely faceted classification (involving facet analysis and synthetic principle), postulation approach, fundamental categories and certain notational devices like sector device, group notation device, emptying digit device and seminal mnemonic device. Regards these as seminal ideas forming basis of his theory of library classification. Considers seventh edition of Colon Classification as best example of application of these ideas.

IITs have now been accepted as the centres of excellence for teaching, training and research in the fields of science, technology, engineering and other allied areas, including social sciences and humanities. Library of these institutions aim to further the goals of their parent organization. They also aim to fulfill the academic and research needs of their user group. Therefore, these institutes are spending huge amount on their libraries by acquiring specialized collection of documents required and used by their users and to provide different types of services needed by them.

A survey was conducted at IIT Library, Madras . Data was gathered through 3 questionnaires (2 for the librarians and one for the users). Users covered included post-graduate students, research scholars and teachers. Mentions briefly the origin and set up of IIT and its Library. Describes various aspects like working hours physical facilities, membership, loan privileges, purpose and frequency of visit to the library. Discusses collection development including acquisition, growth, organization, use and adequacy. Explains user awareness of various library services and their usefulness covers book bank service, media resource facility, computer application, governance, finance and staff. Provides users' over all evaluation and suggestions about physical facilities, collection and its organization, services and attitude of library staff. Gives librarian's suggestions for improvement and future plans.
