DALE (Sheil A) & SCHIPPERS (Guus). Back-up Resources for Distance Learning: Overview and Examples from the Dutch and British Open Universities . 12,2;1987; 166-75

Recent trends in educational philosophy have been towards greater freedom, particularly for adult students. Distance education permits this and can also be attractive for economic reason. It is characterized by the separation of students from each other and from teachers. Multi-media teaching methods are employed. This entails the provision of back-up resources (a) to support students and (b) to support the teaching staff. This paper includes an overview of the media and their usefulness, indicating some didactic and economic variables. Examples of back-up resources from the Dutch and British Open Universities are given with particular reference to libraries.
