In Bangladesh the rural community comprises about 79.9% of the total 126 million people and has its domain in 68,000 villages spread all over the country of 1,47,570 square kilometers. It is therefore evident that Bangladesh lives in her villages, the bulk of the problems are also in rural areas. Libraries are, by their very nature, the centres for the spread of knowledge and information and as such, they can play a very vital role in the rural development in Bangladesh . The rural people need support and assistance for (a) better health, water supply and sanitation (b) to find out about government policy (c) how to produce better crops (d) prevention and control of environment pollution (e) text book and teaching aids (f) sports facilities and (g) prevention and control of social problems. All the above 7 factors can be met up only by the help of rural libraries. For this reason it is very much essential to establish rural libraries in each and every village of Bangladesh . explores the inter linkages between libraries and rural development in a developing country, with special reference to Bangladesh . It also highlights some rural aspects of the country.
