In the context of publishing trends and technical developments since 1977 the paper examines the functions of the national bibliography as an instrument of bibliographic control, as an information resource on the country's cultural and scientific interests and achievements and as a supportive service for the country's libraries. It concludes that the future lies chiefly in the last of these functions, and with the 'national bibliographic database' replacing the national bibliography.
