Briefly outlines the growth and development of library and information services in U.S.S.R during the past seven decades. Highlights the achievements in the areas of literacy, education, science, technology and book-publishing, simultaneously correlating them with the needs of society. Explains the usefulness of libraries, library services and systems. Describes at length, the library networking activities in the Soviet Union aiming at providing the universal availability of knowledge to each individual. Briefly mentions about the use of computers and gadgets of information technology in U.S.S.R. in bibliographic data processing and dissemination of information.
